Tongue Tie Division
Ankyloglossia, commonly referred to as Tongue Tie is a congenital oral anomaly which may decrease movement of the tongue tip. It is caused by a short lingual frenulum which is a membrane connecting the underside of the tongue to the floor of the mouth. It may be associated with a short, square-ended tongue.
Ankyloglossia varies in severity from mild characterized by a mucous membrane band, to complete Ankyloglossia when the tongue is tethered to the floor of the mouth.
Some babies with Tongue Tie have difficulty breast feeding as it prevents them from attaching effectively to the breast. Nipple trauma to the mother may result.
Bottle fed babies may also experience a difficult feeding experience.
Some babies with Tongue Tie experience Speech difficulty others do not.
