Labour
In labour I provide ‘one to one’ support and professional guidance to yourself and your birth partner. I keep you informed at all times discussing your options and allowing you time to consider. Research demonstrates that continuous support during labour has clinically meaningful benefits for women and infants and no known harm. I will provide this support for you throughout your labour and birth. I offer reflexology/aromatherapy and massage to women in labour if desired. Women often wish to use a T.E.N.S machine for pain relief. I provide this for no extra cost. I can deliver your baby at home on land or in water, as is your wish. If you are in water I can monitor your baby as required with my waterproof equipment without moving you or disturbing your water experience. I carry all necessary equipment to ensure you have a safe home birth.
In hospital I continue to provide continuity of care and aim to build a positive relationship with your hospital carers and act as your advocate midwife. While I cannot care for you clinically my midwifery knowledge and experience will provide you with a high care standard. I will ensure your birth wishes are discussed with the NHS staff and adhered to as much as possible.
Independent Midwives within the UK do not have professional indemnity insurance. If you deliver in hospital you will be covered by the NHS Indemnity Fund for any issues arising during the time spend there.
Following the birth of your baby I remain with you for some time to ensure you are well and settled.
Research shows that having the support of your chosen midwife for your birth means you have increased likelihood of achieving the birth you want. Benefits include lower rates of Caesarean Section and other forms of intervention for example medical induction, Vacuum and Forceps delivery. It is also associated with reduced rates of post-natal depression.
